Fast Food Nation Essay essay

There are now several steps in which food goes through. Many Of these steps, while lowering the cost and making the food last longer, also compromise the nutrition value. Food companies have found ways to genetically modify food to make it bigger and taste better. While this may not sound like a bad thing, messing with nature is dangerous. These foods have evolved for thousands of years, and although we think we know a lot, we are deceptively ignorant in the greater scheme of things. The main goal of these innovation is to make food cheaper.

It has gotten to the point that many people can’t afford to buy foods that haven’t been processed and altered by humans. My family is fortunate enough to be able to afford local grass feed beef, and fresh fruits and vendible’s, but this is not the case for the majority of Americans. Many Americans are not aware of this food crisis. It is very important to know where your food comes from, because you are what you eat and by eating a certain food, your also supporting It. After reading about the book “Fast Food Nation”, I learned that food companies are not honest with their customers about where their food comes from. If I’m going to put something into my body, want to know where if comes from. I think that a lot of people know in the back of their head that cheap meat is bad for them. They think that it’s made with preservatives and in a less healthy way. It is thought that grass fed beef is better, but no one stops to think about the details of why. The main goal of large food companies is to mass produce food to create the lowest price possible.

The cost to the animals, the environment, the quality of the food, or the people who eat it does not matter. Within the last decade, food poisoning and fool related illnesses have become much more common. When food such as ground beef are processed in such large quantities, there is a greater chance that a few of the animals will be contaminated with diseases. With all the animals being processed in the same factory, this allows the disease to spread very easily. Many of these diseases tend to be carried by seemingly healthy animals.

Food that is tainted has cost likely come in contact with the animals infected stomach. E. Coli 0157:HA is just one of the deadly diseases found the the stomach of cows. “E. Coli 0157:HA, unlike regular E. Coli bacteria found in the stomach, can release a powerful toxin called “overtones” that attacks the lining of the intestine” (p 199). This disease has taken the lives of children. “Her 6 year old sons was infected with the bug on July 1 993 after eating a tainted hamburger… He became ill on Tuesday night and was dead by Sunday afternoon” (p 200).

Cows are meant to eat grass, they have four stomachs to digest it, so feeding hem corn causes problems. When cattle are feed corn instead of the grass they develop this mutated E. Coli in their stomach. This is why it’s important to understand where your food comes from, and to know who your supporting when buying the food. These large fast food chains and food processing industries are bigger than they have ever been before. There are only about 5 major meat producing plants that feed about 90% of America. These companies have gotten massive.

Thousands of cattle, chickens, pigs, and other animals are killed, ground up, and put into bags each day. Companies were able to grow this big by training one worker to do one job over and over again. This way each person is as efficient as possible, just like a human machine. Personally don’t know of any factory workers around the upper valley, but I have seen videos of factories where people only have one job to do for the whole day. These workers are being mistreated and scammed by the legal system. The workers often hurt themselves by doing the same repetitive motion over and over.

However healthcare is not offered until long after they have started working. The companies know on average workers are changed out 4 times per year, so they can never receive health care. Workers are treated very badly because the companies know the workers can’t do a thing about it due to the fact that many of them are illegal immigrants. So is all this legal? No! To cover up the fact that they use illegal labor, companies will often arrest a few of their workers. Not enough to effect the company, but enough to keep the legal system at bay.
