Faith What is Faith? When I think of Faith the first thing that comes to mind is people always say if you have the faith of a mustard seed, you can move a mountain. That story confused me for a long time because when you read it Jesus chastises the disciples for having little faith and then turns around and tells them that if you have the faith of a mustard seed you could move a mountain. But then had a revelation that I want to share with you today to help you on this journey we call life. When Jesus is talking about mustard seed faith he is not talking about the quantity of our faith but the quality of our faith.
Let’s go back to Matthew 13 when Jesus tells the parable comparing heaven to a grain of mustard seed and how it grows to become a tree to hold the birds of the air. Our faith is supposed to grow just like that. The more we go thru in this life, the more that we see God move and blow our minds, the more our mustard seed faith should grow to become mustard tree faith. How do we get from mustard seed faith to mustard tree faith? The first thing we must do is learn to trust God as our coach. In sports you look to the coach to guide and you trust in his experience to get you thru the game.
The Bible says in SEC 1:9 there is nothing new under the sun. That means God has seen it all. He invented it all so why not trust in his experience? What makes him better than a coach is that a coach is using what has happened in the past to anticipate the future whereas God has already seen the future and promised you the victory. Psalms 1 19 tells us that we are blessed in following his way and seeking him with our whole heart. How do we follow his way? We must take the time to study God’s word so we can understand his instructions and apply them to our everyday life.
If we never pick up the word of God, how do we understand the promises he has made to us? God gives us specific instructions on how to live so that we can have all the things He has promised us. God’s word gives us strength to deal with every trap the devil sets but if you never pick up the bible then it is almost impossible to grow your faith. The only way you can build a relationship with the father is to study his instruction manual. When you study the word of God you develop such a relationship with him, you can see the devil coming and can cut him off in his tracks.
Isaiah 55: 11 assures us that God’s word will accomplish what it set out to do and will not return to him void but if we don’t spend time in our Bible how do we know what the promises are? I am sure it is easy to say trust God and read your Bible and your faith will grow but you don’t have to take my word for it. Look at God’s track record. The reason we trust names like Mercedes, BMW or Lexus is because we look at their past performance, God is no different. When I look at God’s track record, my mustard seed faith begins to grow.
The same God that allowed a couple over 100 years old to eave a baby is the same God that can turn my situation around when the doctor comes back with a negative report. If God took a scrawny shepherd boy with no qualifications and made him King over a nation, the same God can help you to get a job when your background looks funny. If God used a murderer named Moses to deliver his people to the promise land he is the same God that can use us in all our mess to draw others to Christ. Know these situations can cause us to stress and our faith to waiver but that is when you pick up your Bible and God says Do you not know?
Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Now have shared with you in order to get our mustard seed faith to grow we need to trust God as our coach, we need study our word and we need to now God’s history.
One more thing we need to do in order to grow our faith and that is Take EVERYTHING to God in prayer. We have to learn to communicate with God. We have to pray with authority. We have to repeat God’s words to him. We have to encourage Ourselves thru prayer. We also have to talk to the devil and let him know that the Lord is the stronghold and we will not be afraid. Thru prayer we position ourselves to defeat the enemy and receive what God has for us. Thru every trial and tribulation that we overcome our mustard seed faith begins to grow and the things that use to cake us cry and wonder what to do next don’t even phase us like it used to.
We began to stand firm on what God has already done in our lives. Before you know it your faith is so strong it begins to help others get thru their issues. So I know each struggle seems hard but with every valley and wilderness experience there is a mountain and promise land on the other side. But don’t take my word for it the Bible says And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee; fear not, neither be dismayed.
